Two years ago today, I indie-published my fourth book, Easy. At that time, I had a modest following of readers from the first three books in the Between the Lines series (around 500 Facebook likes and Twitter follows, which seemed astronomical to me).
Nine people read Easy before it was released: my husband, my daughter, my best friend, my critique partners and beta readers, and my copyeditor. Once the book went live, I Kindle or Nook-gifted a copy to about two dozen book bloggers who'd reviewed my BTL books. They were all told that whenever they got around to reading and reviewing was fine. I didn't do an official blog tour. I didn't advertise.
I wish I'd better documented what occurred next. I think I was just too stunned to realize what was happening: a word-of-mouth miracle. I watched as the edict pronounced by dozens of Publishing Professionals in blogs and on conference panels was proved wrong - that "readers don't want stories set on a college campus." Because Easy sold. A lot.
Less than two weeks later, I was contacted by a NYC agent, and days after I signed with her, that agent called to let me know that Easy had made the New York Times Bestseller lists for June 24, 2012 for both ebook and combination fiction ("The Big List"). It made the list eight more times before I signed with Penguin that fall.
According to Createspace, 7512 paperback copies of Easy were sold before the Penguin Berkley paperback edition was released on November 6, 2012 (at which point I was contractually obligated to pull the indie-published edition). But I still have a few of them, and there's no rule about whether or not I can give them away... What better time to give gifts than a birthday, amiright?
So. I have four perfect-condition copies up for grabs in the Punchtab giveaway below. They'll come signed (and personalized, if you wish). The giveaway is international. Winners will be chosen randomly by PunchTab. You'll have twenty-four hours to reply to my email before I draw another name - so keep an eye out for that (ie: check your spam filters, too) on June 2nd. (I'm not responsible for lost, damaged, or stolen packages - these are irreplaceable copies.) Good luck!
